Now onto the prequels! Continuing our Alien marathon, I rewatched Ridley Scott's Prometheus, which serves as a prequel to the 1979 classic Alien. The movie kicks off with an intriguing idea about the origins of life on Earth, leading a team of scientists on an expedition to a distant moon. They're funded by a huge corporation with some pretty shady intentions (like obviously lol). Visually, the film is stunning. Scott’s direction really shines through with impressive special effects and a sleek, polished look. The story centers around Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (played by Noomi Rapace) and her partner Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green). They’re on a quest to find the origins of humanity, accompanied by a diverse crew. This includes the mysterious android David (Michael Fassbender) and the cold corporate executive Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron). As they explore the alien terrain, they encounter all sorts of dangerous and mysterious situations, which raises more questions than answers. The film tries to tackle big themes like creation, faith, and the essence of existence. However, it often gets tangled in its complexity and the need to connect to the "Alien" series. The script, co-written by Damon Lindelof, is a bit of a mess, filled with characters making bizarrely foolish decisions. This lack of coherence among the characters can be frustrating, especially when the plot relies on clichéd tropes and predictable twists. That said, Michael Fassbender as David is a standout! He brings a nuanced and unsettling vibe to the android, making him fascinating to watch. Unfortunately, other actors, like Theron and Rapace, don’t get as much to work with, so their performances don’t hit as hard emotionally. The pacing also feels off, with a slow build-up that doesn't always deliver the expected payoffs. One thing the film nails is the sense of awe and wonder. The visual effects are breathtaking, and the alien landscapes are beautifully crafted, creating an atmosphere that's both eerie and captivating. Despite these strengths, the movie struggles with its story and character development, which can leave you feeling a bit underwhelmed. Prometheus is a visually impressive film with big ambitions that it doesn't quite meet. The themes it explores are interesting but not well executed, and the focus on spectacle over substance can be a letdown. There are moments of real tension and intrigue, but they’re overshadowed by a convoluted script and forgettable characters. It’s worth a watch for the visuals and some standout performances, but don’t expect it to blow your mind.

Prometheus is magnificent at times. It is so different to everything in the franchise. Ridley Scott takes us on a new chapter that dives much deeper into the lore of this universe rather than being an action/horror movie. Here a couple of scientists follow clues that could potentially lead to the origin of mankind, to meet who created us and the sole purpose as to why. “Because we could” David is a fascinating character, certainly different to the other synthetics we’ve seen. He seems much smarter and a lot more aware, certainly a lot more mindful. You can see how offended he was when Holloway told him he was created because humanity could. I see Holloway’s sickness at the hands of David as tragic, because of Holloway’s desperations to meet mankind’s maker, he expressed his willingness to do everything to get what he travelled for, thus David spikes his drink with the unknown substance from the planet. These types of movies are the ones that I enjoy a lot, whether it was connected to the alien franchise or not. Sci-Fi is my favorite genre of movies, so you can imagine how captivated I was by not just the visuals but also the story. Sometimes to create, one must first destroy Naive to think that the Engineer would provide immortality to the creation that they seemed to be ready to wipe out. The scene in which the Engineer is awakened had me at the edge of my seat. Although it was obviously not him who created mankind its presence was so immense, so creepy. I heard that there’s a version of this scene in which we understand his brief dialogue with David. As much as I screamed at my screen, wishing to understand what they were saying, I’m actually now glad we didn’t get a word out of him. Was much more impactful, it made it seem like he truly is on mission and that humanity is beneath them. I loved the scene but it was a bit short, Shaw the only one asking the right and interesting questions, I really wanted Weyland to be thrown down an elevator shaft. That being said now, I can understand people’s confusion and frustrations with this movie, because it does seem like the movie answers and asks questions that maybe fans of the franchise never wanted the answers to. There’s even a point in the story where there was so much so going on simultaneous. Regardless of that for me it works, but I can definitely see how this may be the case of a movie in a franchise, not sticking to simplicity, but taking a massive swing instead, and just coming off a bit short.

is a very interesting movie and did a great job at world building and introducing some of the lore, i loved the idea humans have been engineered and the whole creator mystery, beyond excited to see what the next movie brings! “So it begins” I will be watching every single Alien movie in Chronological order and afterwards The Alien vs predator movies, For the very first time. ★★★½ - very good (7/10)
