The film took a while to win me over, mainly because I don't think its grainy digital stylization quite matches its vibe; I also didn't connect very well with some characters for most of the film, especially the one played by Christian Bale, who had a very weak development. But I'm really enthralled by the way Mann records the relationship between bodies and spaces in the shooting scenes (several of the best shooting scenes I've ever watched are here), it's all very fast but extremely well orchestrated, the whole action has a very strong graphic and physical impact. When the film started, I really didn't expect such a dramatic density, in the end, the film is basically poetic, some scenes are emotional (the scene of Johnny Depp's character in the movie theater reveals a very strong power of images, when it comes to creating a more poetic atmosphere as well), it is a film that combines a subtle character drama very well with a very frontal action. Michael Mann, once again, evokes politics through violence; The prison system that only makes individuals more violent, the police that also abuses violence... While, death, rescues a spark of humanity, in a character who is more sure of his "work" than of your own name.
