This one was also hard to give a score. I settled for 5, because I don’t think it was mind blowing, or particularly well put together, But as years have passed since i saw this movie it has stuck with me, the style is very unique and memorable and certain scenes actually did scare me.
Now this is a well paced found footage movie. They didn’t waste a ton of time in the beginning introducing the characters and their lives, they let the story tell that information for you while it jumped right into what was happening. You get the first few scares within the first 20 minutes and at about 30 minutes in things really get interesting. I really enjoyed this movie. It had a good mix scares and day to day to make it feel like a real found footage movie. The story was good and left room for explanation in the story and the option for more movies. The last scene is great, I hadn’t seen it in years and damn was it still creepy as hell. This is one of those movies that is so good you immediately want to watch the next one. Oren Peli's "Paranormal Activity" is a found footage horror film that follows Katie (Katie Featherston), who believes she is being haunted by a ghost. Her boyfriend, Micah (Micah Sloat), purchases a camera to document their experience, and the movie is the footage they captured. Rating: 3/5 As someone who is not the biggest fan of the found footage subgenre, I think "Paranormal Activity" is one of the best I've ever seen. Unfortunately, though, that is not much of a compliment. Starting off with what I believe worked, this film just feels real, and I think that all comes down to the cinematography and camera work. The low video quality paired with a believable setting and realistic lighting all mix together to make this seem like a true disastrous home video. Another massive help in making this look as close to real life as possible are the two lead performances. Micah Sloat and Katie Featherson work so well together as an onscreen couple while also being great by themselves. They deliver performances that aren't quite Oscar-worthy but are great nonetheless. This film also has a lot of suspenseful moments, and while most of them seemingly go nowhere for the time being, the final 30 minutes are pretty stressful. That's when most of the 'action' happens because before it, the film gets pretty boring. That's going to be my first negative about "Paranormal Activity". About the first hour of the film is so repetitive and grows very tiring very quick. It's just a cycle of Micah and Katie arguing during the day, going to sleep, and then something spooky happens. Repeat. There were honestly times when I was checking the runtime to see how much longer I had to sit through it because it was so exhausting. Another thing I didn't love was Sloat's character in this film. He was just too often insufferable and made so many foolish decisions that I wound up genuinely hating him so much. Overall, "Paranormal Activity" was pretty good. It will easily appeal to fans of the found footage subgenre, and maybe some who typically avoid it.
