Critics Review

"रास्ते में लिए गए मोड़ गलत नही होते, इंसान गलत होते हैं ।" "Swades" is a hidden gem in SRK's filmography. The way his character develops is incredible. The film revolves around themes of patriotism, humanity, and the world around us. There are also sub-themes where it criticizes the role of the government and the obedience of civilians. I strongly believe that this film should be screened in schools. The morality of social change is well-executed. The metaphors and dialogues used in the film are truly magnificent and consistently maintain the balance of "show, don't tell." There's a scene where sunlight distinctly falls on Lord Hanuman's painting, perhaps a coincidence or just my over-analysis but it was shown for a couple of seconds, making it feel intentional. The open-air cinema scene caught my attention, as it served as a visual metaphor for the separation of people living in the same village. The star constellation scene symbolizes the importance of unity in diversity, where the stars represent Indian individuals, and their unity leads to the nation's growth, just like a hoe in agricultural fields. By the way, the Hindi word for hoe is "hal", which also means "solution." This could be connected to the film’s moral theme of social change. The song that comes atter this scene actually reinforces my interpretation. The makers aimed to make people realize the true meaning of development, which is often overshadowed by the overuse of words like "culture" and "tradition." If there’s one thing I would nitpick, it’s Mohan Bhargav’s attitude. I mean, why the hell did he never make an effort to sleep in the village instead of that silly caravan?

Swades (2004): A perfect movie that is rare to find. Great plot, acting, characters, script, music, screenplay, and literally everything else are just so fabulously done. This is how a masterpiece is created, a movie that is still relevant today. The album is literally fantastic, both the soundtrack and the music album. The performances are very believable, and the direction is top notch. The movie didn’t do so well at the box office but it has become a cult classic because of rave reviews by critics and audiences. It’s a great family watch too. A masterpiece that can’t be replaced, an evergreen masterpiece.

Mohan Bhargava, played by Shah Rukh Khan, takes on the role of a satellite engineer at NASA in this story. Eventually, he develops feelings of nostalgia regarding his childhood in India and feels guilty about having placed his non-biological guardian, Ms. Kaveri, also known as Kaveri Amma, in a retirement home. Upon returning home, he discovers Kaveri Amma living in a small village called Charanpur, situated on the edges of India. While visiting, he meets again with a girl named Gita, who had been a friend of Mohan since their childhood days with Kaveri Amma. As he stays there, he recognizes his advantages in America while witnessing the struggles and destitution in Charanpur. As he spends time in the area, he finds himself in love with Gita but seeks to persuade Kaveri Amma to accompany him back to America. The music sounds incredible. A R Rahman often earns recognition as one of the greatest music composers in India, and his remarkable background score paired with lovely songs in Swades illustrates why he is held in such high regard. The movie explores themes of humanity, social equality, and unity. While the emotional aspects of the film might not attract all viewers within a patriotic theme, they significantly affect those who identify with the protagonist and their mindset. Despite some weaknesses in the screenplay, the film shines through with Shah Rukh Khan's remarkable acting and a few truly touching scenes. Gayatri Joshi excelled as Gita, while Kishori Ballal and Daya Shankar Pandey also gave strong performances.

Mohan is about to become a resident of the United States, but a personal circumstance makes him come to a village in India. He stays there for a while, observes the overall world, and is quite reluctant of the lifestyle. However, with time and interactions, he becomes one of people over there. He tries to explain his world view, while learns a thing or two about culture. The turning point comes, when his time of going back arrives. The warmth of the place is so deeply rooted in him, that he finds it difficult to let go of the experience that he's had in so many days. The thing that I like the most about this story is the subtle way in which patriotism is portrayed. Those were the times when jingoism wasn't really necessary to show love towards your country. Today, as an average civilian, I think the best thing that can be done for the nation, is to be there for it. To stay and innovate. And that's where 'Swades' scores a home run. In telling this without being preachy in any way. Not a big hit in Shahrukh's filmography, but definitely one of the most memorable ones....
