Oh boy, the second movie in and they decided to do a full 180! The original is such a slow build, has incredibly tense quite scenes and is in no way an action movie, it was a pure spy movie. This one decided that explosions, motorbikes, and nu metal was the way forward. thank god the series managed to fix itself.

Towne’s script is easily the biggest flaw of the film, it doesn’t exactly feel like an organic continuation of the previous movie. And what hurt it, as i mentioned, the most was the charm, humour, banter and fun dialogue is missing in favor of trying to capture what Pierce Brosnan’s 007 films did... The performance Cruise gives this time is “strange”, because the script makes him act like a new version of James Bond, he feels out-of-character here, he’s got this suave level of charm but it just never felt like it fits his character after the previous movie.... The cast here is serviecable, all of them are giving it their all but what’s missing is that charm, the banter, the dialogue, it’s humour, it feels very missing here, the romantic subplot with Thandie Newton (our co-lead) feels unnecessary at best, and it’s bogged down with a very forgettable villain with Dougray Scott, creating this less captivating “Love-Triangle” story... Honestly, John woo’s directing is the best part of this movie, he clearly understands the action level of craziness that the series was doing, there’s slow-mo, doves, stylish aesthetics, and much more, granted it doesn’t fit the mission impossible films, but it definitely felt like someone had a vision.... hans zimmer’s score is bizarrely the worst of the bunch, his rythmic notes and decision to use an electric swing i thought was a flat idea, because the music here just felt “underwhelming”, especially it’s main theme version which i wasn’t a fan of either... Of course, the action is sprawling and bombastic, you can definitely enjoy them overall, especially if you are a fan of Tom Cruise doing the most insane stunts ever, though again it feels like it’s less of Mission-Impossible and more of a James Bond-esque action gung-ho level, while the pack overall isn’t my favorite, it’s serviceable enough for the action this series is known for... Mission: Impossible 2 is what i’d define as “Cool, but too much” like yeah it’s got a very good directing style from John Woo, and of course there’s a nice sense of dedication from Tom Cruise again, but unfortunately it’s a downgrade from the original due to the charm that is stipped away in favor of a slow-burn that has no impact from this unwarranted love-story with it’s two leads shared with it’s disposable villain... M:I 2 might as well be a random adaptation of 007 instead because the story, characters, and screenplay fit nicely for that series than this one, the subplots tear this film to a screeching halt, and Tom Cruise’s bravado is dwindling despite his dedication to the action sequences which are still a nice standout as usual... That being said, i can respect John Woo’s ambitions in his directing style as it’s a film that clearly has a charm to that end, with an aesthetic in it’s visuals, cinematography and doves (LOL), and if your a fan of action well this film certainly delivers in that end... -flickswithmigs

Film Review: "Mission: Impossible 2" "Mission: Impossible 2," the sequel in the MI franchise, is unfortunately the weakest entry in the series. This time, we follow Ethan Hunt once again, but while his character is given a bit more depth, much of that potential is lost due to the film’s messy execution. The plot, centered around the Chimera virus, had potential, but it's weighed down by too many side plots, making it difficult to follow who is aligned with whom and what's happening at any given moment. The pacing is all over the place, with overly long and chaotic action sequences that disrupt the flow. Visually, this film is a step up from the first, with improved cinematography and better production values. However, this improvement is undercut by an overuse of slow-motion effects, which drags down the momentum of the action scenes. The storytelling is further hampered by complex characters that make the narrative hard to follow, and the excessive use of the franchise’s iconic masks—while they provide one excellent twist near the end—ultimately makes the film feel convoluted and overstuffed. Despite these issues, the performances are solid, particularly the antagonists, who bring some much-needed tension to the film. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer also adds a layer of intensity and is a highlight compared to the score in the first film. The climactic twist with the mask is one of my favorite moments in the franchise and almost redeems the film’s weaker aspects. Overall, "Mission: Impossible 2" is visually strong but narratively weak, with poor pacing and editing that make it a tough watch. It has its memorable moments, but they aren’t enough to save the film from being the franchise’s low point. The twist at the end is the saving grace, and for that, I’ll give it a passing grade—but just barely, at a 6/10. The second installment in the franchise, Mission Impossible 2 isn't a bad film, but it's not the best of the series. Unfortunately, the film is poor because of a somewhat DISAPPOINTING story. The romantic side of the love story serves no purpose and creates a problem for the film, which already has poor, or at least overly repetitive, direction by John Woo. John Woo, who wasn't the first choice, was initially Oliver Stone, but left the project due to the filming of Eyes Wide Shut, which Tom Cruise chose beforehand. This would have resulted in a completely different film. Regarding the casting, the entire remaining cast from the first film is not returning, except for Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames. We're faced with a new cast that performs well but isn't exceptional, despite the presence of Anthony Hopkins. In terms of stunts, Tom Cruise does some great ones, especially the immense bare-handed cliff climbing, as well as the motorcycle and car races. In any case, it's a film I enjoyed the first time around, but upon rewatching it, I was disappointed and a little fed up because I found it so unrepentant.
