Critics Review

It’s is a heartwarming movie about a young boy who discovers a love for ballet, even though his family expects him to be a boxer. It's a nice, uplifting story about following what you love, no matter what others think.

Stephan Daldry’s ‘Billy Elliot’ is a quintessential coming of age film that’s a beautiful experience encompassed with themes that hit close to your heart and leaves you sobbing and smiling simultaneously. A wonderfully realised and directed film that explores the themes of masculinity, resistance against oppression, class struggle and growing up. Billy Elliot loves to dance but can’t express himself because in his world boys can only play football, wrestle or box. The amalgamation of emotionally stirring images and music creates magic on screen along with a bustling performance from Jamie Bell. There are two resistances in the film, one of the coal miners against low pay and the other is that of Billy against his father and brother who think of Ballet as not masculine enough. Everyone has a different weapon to resist oppression, where one is able to bring a change of heart and others cave in to the brutality. The epic last 20-30 minutes somehow reminds me of Cinema Paradiso and created an emotional rut within me that reached a crescendo in the last scene to perfectly encapsulate the emotions of melancholy, relief and love.
