Tony Scott's direction is good on the myriad of characters played by an all-star cast of Gandolfini, Zahn, Denzel, Hackman, Viggo, and even a young Ryan Phillippe. I could've done without the recycled shots of the sub and the missiles, but why waste money reshooting when you can just flip them and run on a different direction. A perfect cable TV weekend movie to cure a hangover or ignore while you scroll your phone. However, this high-caliber team also set the bar so high that it left little room for surpassing expectations. ——— Bringing together the talents of Tony Scott, Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, and Jerry Bruckheimer could result in nothing less than a solid and entertaining film, and Crimson Tide is exactly that—a masterfully executed war thriller with excellent performances from an exceptional cast. The tension is relentless from the moment the U.S. and Russian submarines engage in their first conflict, with betrayals, mutinies, and philosophical battles that leave the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Crimson Tide stands tall among the great submarine movies of its decade, such as U-571 and The Hunt for Red October. While it certainly deserves a spot on that prestigious list, some of the suspense is diminished by the unwavering certainty that Denzel Washington's character is in the right and that a nuclear holocaust will be averted. This predictability slightly dulls the edge of the tension and makes the final reveal of the critical message less surprising. Nevertheless, Crimson Tide remains a compelling and well-crafted film that I would wholeheartedly recommend.
