A mini series of 4 episodes. A story of a brave girl who sets up to living life on her own terms. The series is loosely based on the autobiography of Deborah Feldman, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots. Esther Shapiro aka Etsy, as she is renamed in the series, (Shira Haas) lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn along with the other Jews, as a part of an ultra orthodox community. Raised as an orphan, owing to a mother who gave up on her (so it is believed till the end) & an alcoholic father; she is only close to her grandmother. She is a total misfit in the orthodox set up. With the expectations that she is not able to cope up with in her married life, she decides to escape to Berlin (her mother is a German citizen & had provided her the paperwork, in case need be) where her birth mother is. She forms a connection with a group of musicians & gets the inclination to pursue her own dreams in the same field. She had been secretly learning piano, all this while. It is indeed, sad, that in certain walks of faith, women still are seen as nothing more than someone who bears a child to keep the family name going on. Freedom is every individual’s right and should be granted to them. Similarly, Etsy, too, is a happy & a better person as soon she escapes from the prison like life she lived in. It’s ironical & sad how religion, society and orthodox beliefs tend to harm an individual and his/her right to living a life one desires. The series is thought provoking, progressive & emotional. The best part is that it isn’t dragged at any point & remains fast paced & on-point. Shira Haas does a wonderful job. All in all, a very awakening series. A must watch
