This film creates an atmosphere of intense unease and adopts a very chilly portrayal style. Isabelle Huppert's portrayal of the complex character Erika is captivating and pulls you in with her powerful performance. She truly shines in bringing out the depth of the character. For cinephiles looking for exceptional acting in the erotic genre, The Piano Teacher is a must-watch.

I was unsure of what to say about The Piano Teacher. Its first scenes pushed my buttons from the start, setting an eerie atmosphere around the dynamics between Erika and her elderly mother. I seldom have seen characters as well developed as Erika Kohut. Below the cold, demanding and austere exterior, is revealed a woman with twisted inner complexes and taboo desires, at least willing to express the ideas she has been repressing to someone. I think it's safe to say Erika has no scruples and feelings of empathy and compassion. But Hupert discloses slowly throughout the film her mangled soul and descent into some sort of madness. The ending is a stroke of genius; as soon as the center of power shifts from her to Walter through an irreversible act of violence, Erika crumbles completely and gives up the disciplined aspect of her self. She finally saw through her desire of losing control and being hurt, but the reality of it is maybe not what she expected. She is irrevocably broken inside. Any director who manages to explore taboo themes beyond their shock value and propose meaningful reflections deserves praise, and Haneke's The Piano Teacher is one of the best examples I have ever seen. As difficult to assimilate as it is, this is, in my opinion, a true classic of the psychosexual drama genre.
