8/10 To my surprise, John Williams scored this film, and it’s all the better for it. As with all of his scores, the themes add to the emotion of the story. Additionally, the cinematography is rather gorgeous. So many of the wides capture the landscape beautifully. James and Susan’s relationship is rather jumpy, which, as a large component of the plot, is an issue. It seemingly has a lot of progress off screen, and also has beats that come far too quickly. Otherwise, I thought the characters were fairly enjoyable. Kingsfield was delightfully deplorable, and James was surprisingly active in the plot. He has a nice arc as well. The standout performance comes from John Houseman, who won a few awards for his role in this film. He steals the show every time he’s on screen. Timothy Bottoms and Lindsay Wagner have some decent chemistry too, though.
