What an ending! A scummy, dirty cop movie that left me wanting to take a shower (complimentary).

3.5/5⭐- "Never trust anyone!" The first half of the movie really tested my patience, as it slowly built the story, but after the half way mark, the movie went into the berzerk mode and carried it till the end. Gene Hackman as a short tempered detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle took the movie a notch up in the second half. The railway station scene where Jimmy and Alain(Fernando Ray) plays the cat and mouse game was the turning point of the movie and then comes the iconic chase sequence which was the best scene in the whole movie. The whole chase sequence was thrilling and breathtaking to watch. And the electrifying background score played a major role in elevating the sequences in the second half as well. And after that the ending was good. As a whole it's a slow paced thriller in the first half, which really tested my patience and after that it was an adrenaline pumping thriller ride till the end. 8.6/10 The score here is supremely memorable. The main theme is well composed and evolves in interesting ways throughout the film. The movie largely takes a handheld approach, putting us in the scene with the characters, and this choice works for the setting. The action is extremely well presented. The famous car chase is famous for a reason. It’s intense, as is the finale. What makes this film and the characters work is that Doyle loses at the end. He doesn’t catch the criminal and he’s booted to another division of the police force. It’s critical of his character; his methods are wrong and he loses at the end because of it. Gene Hackman plays the faulty Doyle well. Fernando Rey’s performance works for the drug lord, Alain.
