It’s Star Wars…the characters are all set up and I’m already invested so its already done a lot of the hard work for me. But there was something just a tad disappointing about this. Not as bad as everyone is making out, but not as good as a Star Wars film can be.

This is where I’m heavily contemplated. Because I know that there’s people that see this as a movie that actually tried to be ambitious and do something different with Star Wars, I totally see what they mean, but also people say that they completely ruined Luke’s character and that Rian Johnson murdered Star Wars right in front of them, I kinda also see what they mean lmao. This movie starts with Rey handing the lightsaber to a much older Luke Skywalker, most would already think that he’s a very experienced, wise and seasoned Jedi Master, similarly to Yoda in Empire Strikes back, but immediately he throws the lightsaber and I was like oh okay maybe this movie won’t be predictable like I thought it would. On one hand that’s a good sign, but also it felt out of character for Luke and that’s where I’ll dive deeper towards. In terms of character, I think that this movie is for Star Wars fans, what Man of Steel and Batman V Superman is for me. Movies with grand and ambitious writing, but their beloved characters are not “acting” the way they would’ve expected them to. This is a very weird place because there’s arguments to be had on both ends, would you like the same thing to eat everyday? Or work thing completely new that might risk you liking it or not. Clearly the answer was split 40/60 because I hadn’t even seen this films yet and I remember the civil war this movie caused EVERYWHERE. So Luke, nearly killing his own nephew in a split second decision that he regretted immediately because he felt darkness in him is an interesting but VERY risky way to show your character isn’t perfect and how he struggles with the idea of living up to being a living legend. Now if we dive into the other character, I think Rey is fine in this story I really have no problems with her. Finn however, yeah I don’t like what they did with him, everything with him and Rose were scenes I found insufferable, and why is she the one teaching a child soldier about the ugly side of war? I don’t know that made no sense to me. First half of the movie felt a little dragged out and awkward at times. At the middle point however things get CRAZY. Did I expect Snoke to get bodied the way he did? Hell no I really loved how shocked I felt in that moment and I thought it was very crystal clear that it was to set up Kylo Ren as the main antagonist for the remainder of this film and the trilogy in general but I’ll get to that with Rise of Skywalker. The death of Luke Skywalker in cinema is something that should probably be one of the most groundbreaking deaths in the history of cinema, or atleast you’d think. His speech to Kylo Ren was fantastical, ending with “ and I will not be the last Jedi” was amazingly done and that’s all due credit to Mark Hamill’s incredible performance, however I wasn’t particularly convinced that his death was done properly. And that’s because I got way too attached with this character in the first trilogy to then feel nothing when he died in the sunset. This movie is something alright, it’s grand, epic and filled with amazing cinematography but it’s also bogged down by character decisions and narrative issues that make it for a very frustrating movie to describe, I’m not an og Star Wars fan so I don’t feel the hatred towards Luke’s journey like most do and I’ve also not been watching these movies long enough to feel like they needed to reinvent the wheel so aggressively. Just like the lightsaber I am split completely down the middle this time.

I don't really know what to think of this movie. At the beginning the prologue says that the First Order reigns. What did I miss? The end of the last movie showed how the Resistance blew up Starkiller Base! Well... They learned to tell something moderately original, but the story doesn't quite work. It's confusing, contradictory and sometimes meaningless. They lowered several revolutions with respect to the previous one. There is action, but there is also an attempt to discover one's own identity and that of the enemy, however, I don't know how effective it was, really. Luke's stubbornness seemed like a total waste of time to me, as well as many things that perhaps could have been solved in a simpler and faster way, for example, the adventure in Canto Bight doesn't make any sense, because they end where they started. The positive points are taken by the technical aspects and the cast, as expected in a great production like this, but even there we can find some troubles. There are some editing and vfx details that show a lack of care for small details. This is a totally mediocre movie. Despite the originality problems of Episode VII, I had much more fun with that movie than with this one.
