The original trilogy of Star Wars films really doe seem to get better with age for me. They’re not simple, but there is something simplistic about them, something raw and just a bare boned version of story telling. The effects still look great to this day and it never gets boring watching this film.

The original trilogy ends with The Incredible Return of the Jedi which is my favorite film of the trilogy, the film takes us back to Tatooine and Dagobah but also takes us to discover the planet Endor with its famous Ewoks. The film concludes the trilogy at its time and brings the plot to its end (the sequel will not be released until 32 years later and the prequels 16 years later). The story of Luke Skywalker, of the Rebel Alliance against the empire, of Darth Vader, of Han Solo... ends with a film which is very good because of its story, its special effects, its bestiary and its universe . The production by Richard Marquand is not too bad. Some shots have aged badly once again but when you see the rushes and many cut scenes they are worse. The film is similar in certain points (Death Star, Luke/Vader fight to previous episodes) but that does not spoil the plot and gives us revelations. The original trilogy marked a turning point for cinema and for spectators of its time, as it was such a huge hit at the box office. I will end up saying that characters like Yoda, Boba Fett, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Jamba, R2-D2, C3PO, Palatine... will return in the prequels 16 years later. As for Luke, LEÏA, Han Solo, Chewbacca... will return in the sequel 32 years later.

I don’t like to jump on bandwagons so easily but I think I agree with the majority here. This is not a bad film by any means by I think it’s easily the weakest one in the trilogy. The movie starts out with a bang, getting Han back from Jabba the Hutt, so it makes for an exciting start. After that unfortunately in the middle the movie becomes pretty uneventful. The ewoks are cute but we spend a lot of time with them in this movie and with it being the final one in this trilogy I wanted things to speed up a little bit. Luke on a mission to destroy the second Death Star and bring Darth Vader back from the dark side, the finale of this movie really lands so perfectly well, with us already getting to know Luke, him going to the dark side was never in the cards and his Anakin saving him realizing that Luke was right about him was incredibly well done. Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker some of my favorite characters in cinema, the music in the end hit right in the feels.

Man, it’s actually so annoying that there no place where you can watch the original theatrical cuts of the original trilogy. Like, really? We have to sit through that terrible song sang by an early 2000s CGI alien at Jabba’s place? I wish I still had my VCR so I could watch the old tapes my family has of the theatrical cuts, but really it’s a travesty that they’re not streaming anywhere or on any DVD or Blu-Ray. As much as I think Star Wars is overrated as a franchise, the original trilogy is important to cinematic history, as are the original cuts, and they should not be locked away to be replaced with inferior “special-edition cuts” that change the special effects, add back in deleted scenes(which were obviously deleted for a reason), and digitally insert actors from the prequels to be ghosts. Or, at the very least, the theatrical cuts should also be available to viewers.
