One of Marvel's most popular heroes and one of the most popular super heroes of all time joined the MCU in Civil War and now gets his first stand alone film since Andrew Garfield wore the mask. What we got, despite some of its growing pains, I really like. Let's get popping. Peter Parker is just trying to get through high school, but after helping Iron Man he feels like he can and should be doing more than being a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Peter gets his chance when he encounters a group of people, lead by the Vulture, who salvages dangerous alien tech. What works and what I love about Spider-Man Homecoming is how it leans into its John Hughes inspirations to create a somewhat quirky yet charming addition to the MCU that feels distinct. Everyone here feels like high school kids just figuring things out in their lives, making the focus feel smaller for Peter as he is one of the only heroes in the MCU who has to balance the two identities. It's not about the end of the world, instead it's about asking the girl out to the school dance, being a good student, and keeping the neighbourhood Peter knows and loves safe. While I think the Vulture is a really solid villain here, it feels like Jon Watts turned him into a Tony Stark villain instead of Spider-Man, though not as much as Mysterio. You understand why Adrian Toomes does what he does, and when he and Peter meet, it's one of the best scenes in the film. Tom Holland proves here why he's such a good Peter Parker and Spider-Man, giving us fun quips, quirky actions, and the struggle of having the bravery to ask the girl out while stopping bad guys like it's nothing. Director Jon Watts uses his tone and direction so well to truly show how much of a kid Peter is here, making his heroism genuine and hopeful. Peter's friendship with Ned is a great because they work so naturally together and Micheal Keaton as Vulture is also really solid. I really like Spider-Man Homecoming, especially in the context of part one of an origin story. The Hughes inspiration is charming and the film is still consistently funny because in the end we relate to Peter, even if he has great powers and greater responsibility.

Now this! This is finally Spider-Man! after having to waste my time sitting through both Amazing Spider-Man films (amazing by name only) we finally get a fun, charming, wise cracking, awkwardly nerdy Peter Parker. The film that comes from that feels so grounded and is a massive breath of fresh air.

The filmmakers do a great job of balancing the action with quieter moments of character development, allowing the audience to connect with Peter on a personal level. Spider-Man: Homecoming is a fun and entertaining film that successfully reinvents the character for a new generation. It's a must-watch for fans of both Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
