What is it that you remember most about 1991’s Robin Hood Prince of Thieves? Was it Kevin Costner’s very questionable English accent, which he didn’t even bother to do for most of the film? Was it Alan Rickman’s campy performance as the Sheriff of Nottingham? Was it Bryan Adams’ theme song, Everything I Do? Was it that out-of-nowhere late cameo by Sean Connery as King Richard? Or was it that awesome point of view shot from an arrow, which was cutting edge at the time? For me, I used to watch this film constantly on loop whenever it was showing on telly! Growing up, I used to want to BE Robin Hood! Maybe I still do… I have always had a real soft spot for this film, and I’d even go as far as saying it is the best Robin Hood film! It’s immediately clear that everyone involved is aiming for the tone and feel of an old-fashioned adventure picture, as Robin Hood Prince of Thieves certainly boasts many of the qualities that one has come to expect from such an endeavour, for example, the emphasis on larger than life action sequences and even larger than life performances perpetuating that very specific vibe! I almost wish more films like this were made today to be honest… Granted, Kevin Costner is an odd choice to play Robin, and I know he often gets shat on for how dodgy his accent is, but I still enjoy his performance. However it is evident that he is often overshadowed by the supporting cast such as Morgan Freeman, but it remains even clearer that Alan Rickman’s campy, over-the-top and scenery-chewing performance is the film’s biggest highlight! Except for a sluggish midsection, the pace is rousing, and the 138 minute runtime builds to a crowd-pleasing climax, complete with that surprise cameo appearance that couldn't be more welcome or appropriate! Despite the miscasting of the central role and quite a lot of lacklustre dialogue, the classic story proves again to be almost foolproof. The fight sequences are explosive, the production design is impressive, the score is iconic, and the supporting performances are full of juice!
