Grace (Weaving) has just married the love of her life Alex (O’Brien), who has been absent from his uber wealthy Le Domas family for years. Having acquired their fortunes from generations past, most notably board games, they are notoriously unique in their own way. On the night of the ceremony, she discovers an ancient tradition that each new member of the family must become involved in; Game night. When her random choice of game is chosen as Hide and Seek, little does she know that when she is found, her new in laws won’t just find her, they will kill her too. She now has until dawn to win the game, or the family's long time 'promise' might be broken. Pretty quick to get going, – but once it does it gets going it gets going, with plenty of over the top violence that would make Quentin Tarantino giggle with glee. The narrative doesn’t give too much away too soon in way of the mythology of the family either. There are some fairly humorous parts within the violence, and whether you think that the third act reveal of the family’s traditions work or not is up to individual interpretation. (I was not a big fan of the ‘supernatural’ element so it didn’t work for me). I didn’t hate it though. If you like the gore/horror of the late 90s early 00’s then this will be right up your alley, and might bring some nostalgia. The directors would go on to direct the 5th Scream movie a couple of years later (which I have previously reviewed) 3/5

Aside from some pacing issues in the first 15 minutes, Ready or Not nails the horror-comedy genre. Samara Weaving shines as one of the best final girls in recent memory. Her performance is equal parts fierce and vulnerable, embodying the perfect balance of terror and determination. Not since Sydney Prescott have we seen this level of sharp survival instincts, making her a standout in modern horror. The supporting cast adds an extra layer of fun and tension. Andie McDowell is especially delightful, bringing charm and humor to her role, making you almost root for her, despite her character's questionable moral compass. The film’s blend of dark humor and high stakes keeps you on the edge of your seat, as every twist and turn feels both terrifying and hilarious. Visually, Ready or Not delivers a gothic aesthetic that perfectly complements its themes of wealth, tradition, and survival. The use of the sprawling mansion as the primary setting adds to the claustrophobic tension, while also serving as a twisted playground for the action to unfold. The film's sharp dialogue and witty banter make it as much a comedy as it is a horror movie, ensuring that even in its bloodiest moments, there's something to laugh about. Overall, Ready or Not is a thrilling ride that offers a fresh take on the final girl trope, combining humor, horror, and social commentary in a way that feels original and incredibly entertaining.

No se si catalogarla como slasher, terror o comedia o simplemente es una combinación de todo. Grace y Alex tendrán su boda de en sueño, sin pensar que hay una tradición que deben cumplir y que dará un giro difícil a esta historia. Cuenta la leyenda que cada vez que un integrante de la familia se casé, deben jugar el juego que una misteriosa caja diga o todos ellos morirán, resulta que a Grace le toca el peor juego y es ahí donde esta pobre chica debe luchar por sobrevivir. Una película rápida y con una dosis agradable de comedia y gore que lo que logra es que por lapsos cerremos los ojos por lo violenta de una muerte o que nos riamos de una situación incómoda. Ahh y que no se me olvide, fan a muerte de Samara Weaving, que a leguas se le muestra la calidad de actuación.

Best final line they could have... "in-laws." One of the bloodiest and pretty demented wedding nights in cinema. Samara Weaving is such a great final girl. She owns the role with her guttural screams and fight to the end performance. I forgot about the somewhat supernatural ending but I like that it sets up a legit chance for the sequel to be a different family and give us more crazy fun. Adam Brody is a ton of fun and Andy McDowell is always a pleasure to have in anything. A super fun time start to finish and features a nail scene that rivals the stairs in A Quiet Place. 441/500 movies & tv for 2024
