✅ 3.3 / 5 ✅ — Raya and the Last Dragon has less action than the trailers promised but it was still a great time! ——— Raya and the Last Dragon promised to be Disney's first martial arts fantasy action epic. While it may have softened on the martial arts and epic aspects, it still proved to be a fun movie. Raya embarks on a quest to find the last dragon in hopes of rescuing her father. Along the way, she assembles a team of misfits and rebels in Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven style for a climactic final showdown—only to ultimately choose unity over adversity, saving the world through trust instead of swordplay. I get it, Disney. It’s a PG movie for kids, featuring fuzzy comedic dragons and cute animal sidekicks, but the trailers promised martial arts and epic sword fights. The film was at its absolute best during those brief moments of kung fu combat that danced across the screen, though these scenes were less frequent than I had hoped. I wanted to see the warriors truly throw down and fight, but in the end, altruism and hope saved the day. I understand that I'm not the primary target audience, but with all that considered, I still enjoyed the film. The character designs were fantastic, and the voice cast was excellent. Regardless of whether there was as much action as I wanted, having a martial artist Disney Princess who can kick some butt is still pretty cool.
