This film is quite boring and disappointing. Daniel Day-Lewis's character has a strong base for a movie exploring toxic masculinity, but loses every potential to a mild tale of domestic disagreements between a young wife and a morose, insufferable husband. Vicky Krieps's character was good, compelling even, but she got lost in the dull narrative. It is strange. The acting, costumes and cinematography are quite remarkable, a couple of quotes are striking. But these elements are not enough to make the film interesting on their own. It's like the plot actually spoils everything good the film had to offer. What a sad thing.
“I never really liked myself. I thought my shoulders were too wide. My neck was skinny like a bird. And I had no breasts. I felt my hips were larger than needed and my arms too strong. But in his work I become perfect, and I feel just right.”
