Every time there’s a combing operation, the goons mysteriously manage to get the upper hand. Ooh there’s a mole amongst us, says a cop, with deep surprise: it’s like no one’s heard of bad eggs in the police department before. The banal bits weigh heavily on some of the interesting twists, and you are left wondering where so much of the cultural specificity of Bengal, which should have really made this thing really sing, has vanished. Does it have to do with the imperatives of streaming in India, to make everything palatable to everyone, even if that leads to flattened narratives? Whatever happened to taking creative risks, in order to create the excitement which a show like this needs? Examples are not far: Netflix’s own latest show, ‘Adolescence’, which has blown us all away, is set in a small British town, with its characters speaking in accents-and-cadences completely their own, without fearing if the audience will be alienated. Can we please have a show like that for Indian audiences? Or is that too tall an ask? Khakee, an outstanding cop drama by Rajkumar Santhoshi, hit the theaters 21 years ago. Many view this film as one of the top creations of the renowned filmmaker. The film's plot revolves around a police team tasked with bringing a convict to court. What appeared to be an ordinary trip transforms into a fascinating adventure filled with challenges, and the rest of the tale showcases how the team confronts each obstacle and accomplishes its goal. The confrontation between the police and the masked individuals at the start of the film is impressive. The trip from Chandangadh to Mumbai features many exciting moments. One of the scenes features an action sequence set in a village fair, surrounded by hundreds of cattle. The argument between Amitabh and Akshay before the interval is heated. Ajay's attempt to hurt Amitabh in that episode is quite poignant. Even after the interval, the film features several brilliantly executed sequences. The clash between Amitabh and his opponent, which starts during the interval. Akshay's newfound support for Amitabh during the mission reflects his change of heart. Amitabh's passionate outcry at the police station, emphasizing the duties that come with wearing a uniform to the Officer In charge. The pursuit involving the train and the subsequent scene with Tusshar and the constable's wife. The moment before the climax reveals the true identity of the villain's accomplice. The climax where Amitabh confronts the villain. Tusshar and Ajay's last interaction in the film deserves attention. Rajkumar Santoshi's dialogues add another dimension to the film, eliciting loud applause at many key points. The cinematography by K.V. Anand is exceptional. The action sequences created by Tinu Verma stand out and serve as a key strength of the film. Ram Sampath's compositions belong to the popular genre. Even though all three songs from 'Wada Raha', such as 'Dil Dooba' and 'Aisa Jadoo' featuring Lara Dutta, seem moderately contrived within the screenplay, they do not hinder the narrative's flow or its authenticity. Amitabh Bachchan gives one of the finest performances of his career. He faces some of the most challenging scenes in the film. A less skilled artist would not have been able to portray the character effectively. The character comes alive through Bachchan's expressions, voice, and movements. This work should act as a guide for anyone appearing on camera in Bollywood. Akshay Kumar excels in the character of Shekhar. The actor makes a lasting impact even when competing with formidable performers. He performs exceptionally well in action sequences. This performance is certainly the best in his career. Ajay Devgan showcases another significant achievement with a performance that only a true master could deliver. His interactions with Amitabh Bachchan stand out as examples. Aishwarya Rai receives a character that allows her to showcase her talent, and she exceeds all expectations. Tusshar might not speak much, but his presence and expressions leave a significant impression. Tanuja excels in a brief yet impactful part. Jaya Pradha is sufficient. Atul Kulkarni shows unique authenticity. Lara Dutta shines in the 'Aisa Jadoo' song. Overall, KHAKEE showcases excellent performances, a captivating web-like plot, remarkable action sequences, and skilled direction as its strengths. These various factors collectively ought to provide a satisfying experience for audiences.
