This is my comfort movie

6/10 Yes, it’s funny. The placement of historical people in modern situations is funny on its face, but many of the jokes also work. The mocking of evil historical groups and situations, such as the Spanish Inquisition and slavery, is funny. A lot of the one-liners can be shallow, but are funny for their shock value. There’s no real plot to the entirety of this film, though. The segments don’t even really connect thematically. What makes this worse is that Brooks will occasionally throw out interesting satire that can be seen in each era he presents, the most obvious example of which being the ridicule of the rich and powerful, but it’s never enough to warrant the rest of the film. What’s perhaps even worse is that, honestly, I was kind of invested in Comicus, Josephus, and Miriam. Their plot was simple, sure, but it worked well enough, but then they just end up fine and we skip to the Spanish Inquisition. The music in this movie can also present some strange filmmaking decisions. It feels like Brooks wanted this to be a musical, but then only went halfway with it by having just two full songs and a couple of shorter fragments of musical numbers. There’s also an extremely random use of “Funky Town” by Lipps Inc. The score, in its frequent use of the main theme, works, though.
