(EN)🇬🇧 Danish film that already caught my attention with its trailer, it finally arrived in theaters a couple of weeks ago, written and directed by Nicolaj Arcel and with a great cast, by our Mads Mikkelsen who in my opinion is always a joy that is seen in a billboard movie. A most interesting story set in the 18th century, Ludwig, a former military man, played by Mikkelsen, who wants to acquire some land in what they call wasteland, which is an infertile land that many have failed when trying to take advantage of. her, but Ludwig will not back down and will do everything possible to take advantage of her....but of course, she will be the focus of many nobles and the king.... We are presented in a quite graphic way the cruelty of the nobility and ruthless feudal system in this dramatic western in which we are sometimes presented with touches of Thriller. Our protagonist is a taciturn man, who suits this actor like a glove, with contained interpretations as well as intense expressions, and with an evolution that is to be applauded, and of course the photography and direction work is superb. In short, a raw but very moving story that, from my point of view, represents overcoming and the search for happiness. All the actors' work is incredible, no character is too much for you, it's not that there are too many but those that exist are well defined in their roles. It is a great film from start to finish, in just over two hours of footage a lot happens, and especially knowing that this is based on a true story, it is fascinating.
is a sprawling period drama that chronicles the true story of Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) as he attempts to cultivate the 'heath' an inhabitable land where seemingly nothing grows. It's interesting, exciting and has a surprisingly emotional element to it that is constantly shocking. To me this is easily one of Mads best! This film is about what someone can make from essentially nothing. To those who sit back in the comforts of their mansion, this can cause jealousy and rage, especially when the farmer has very little help and resources, and who is a bastard with not an ounce of nobility running through their veins. This film is shocking. Very shocking. But is it shocking for the sake of being shocking? I struggled with this question several times. I felt like there were several moments that needed to take a step back, let the story breathe, rather than throwing one conflict after the other at us. In many ways, it does this by having moments of levity. It also does this by having touching moments between characters, particularly the relationship between Ludvig and the little girl character, Anmai Mus. It’s a beautiful relationship that is the heart of the story. However, was the character of De Schinkel too much? Maybe, but at the same time, it’s hard to deny that the shock factor was effective. My eyes were glued to the screen. I didn’t think about the runtime at all. I wanted the farmer’s Sisyphean efforts to persist to pay off. It messed me up, but I was totally invested. ★★★★ - near perfect (8/10)
