Critics Review

The final X-Men film released by Fox had an infamous history. Having shown off a interesting horror tone in the initial teaser, the film would be delayed over and over again, subjugated to reshoots and that resulted in a complete tonal overhaul and reworking of the final act, and released in 2020 in the height of the pandemic. With The New Mutant, the X-Men went out with a whimper, so let's get popping. After a mysterious accident separates Dani from her father, she wakes up in a mysterious facility run by a single doctor and housing a few other patients. The thing about the patients is that they're all mutants with abilities too dangerous to control yet. Nothing seems right there, and with a mysterious superior pulling the strings, slowly but surely, our young mutants will discover the hidden truth. The final product we ended up getting is a lot of things but good movie is not one of them. What was a promising teaser was reworked so much that the horror here is pathetic and delves into so many teen and super hero clichés that watching it feels like a slog at times. There's no knowing how much of Josh Boone's original vision was changed, but I know the third act was hit the hardest, which begs to question why we thought the guy who directed The Fault in Our Stars could do horror. The lighting feels flat and Boone doesn't do enough to disorient the viewer the same way the other patients are when their greatest fears come to life. Out of everyone here, I thought Maisie Williams had the strongest performance as Rahne but that's not saying much. Everyone here has a weird accent or is just a little cringey which is a tribute to the directing. Like I swear there are times when Charlie Heaton's southern accent just goes away. Anya Taylor Joy has the coolest part playing Magik, but her dialogue from the bad script made me roll my eyes. It's a shame how this film turned out with such a strong premise and engaging teaser, but the choices made here are too safe, living in the realm of clichés instead of creative fear. It'll be interesting to see what Disney does with the X-Men, but there's no denying Fox ended the rollercoaster with a wet fart.

The New Mutants is a decent film with not a whole lot of depth. The plot follows the main character after she witnesses the destruction of her tribe. She wakes up in a hospital for mutants. As she and the doctor is trying to discover her powers, things start going wrong for the other patients at the facility. I think some of my favorite parts of the film is the horror-esque elements that are thoughtout the film. Each mutant has a unique tragic past and the utilizes it well! Another good aspect are the performances, with the one standout being Anya Taylor-Joy! I think the story could definitely use some work, it’s kinda rushed and all over the place at times. I’m still trying to understand the main character’s power, she manipulates people’s fear, but it’s kind of convoluted. There is but isn’t a main villian, that’s another aspect that detracts the movie for me. Each of thr other character’s powers are interesting and I wish we would’ve gotten to see more of them. All in all, The New Mutants, while not amazing by any means, has its moments and I give it a 3/5!

As an action movie, "The New Mutants" is a failure. As a horror movie, it’s a failure. Even as a piece of entertainment, it’s a failure. This is nothing more than a cheap cash grab whose only purpose is to make a quick buck off brand recognition alone. The only time I’ll ever think about this movie again is when I have to decide where to place it on my worst-of-the-year list.

2.5/10 This is one of the most flatly filmed movies I’ve watched in a long time. The cinematography is so boring. The little CGI that is in this movie is the most fake the franchise has seen. The scene where Illyana uses her powers against the smiling men looks horrible, as do Dr. Reyes’ shields and the final battle. Sam is the only mildly likable character in this movie. He’s actually reasonable. Otherwise, the characters are terrible. The rest are flat and bland. The New Mutants also changes genres in a whim. It jumps between drama, superhero, and horror with no natural transitions. The pacing is also so slow, and the movie is only AN HOUR AND A HALF. It feels like two and a half.
