While this film was very true to the game it was based on, and the character of Lara Croft was very well portrayed, unfortunately the movie was just quite boring, outlandish in parts, had awful CGI and terrible dialog. While it wasn't a terribly made movie, it just wasn't very enjoyable, fairly boring.
A fun entry in the Tomb Raider film catalog that feels caught between a more grounded survival film and a full on action adventure. In 2013, Crystal Dynamics reinvented Tomb Raider as a survival adventure franchise with a young inexperienced Lara Croft who grows and matures throughout the game franchise eventually earning her full Tomb Raider glory. This Lara wasn’t the larger than life, dual wielding superhero but a more relatable more human character that audiences could relate to making the danger much more perilous and desperate. This was the inspiration for Alicia Vikander’s 2018 Tomb Raider. The story meant to reintroduce a younger novice Lara Croft and thrust her into her first treacherous adventure. But the influence of Jolie’s action oriented Croft could be felt as this rookie somehow performed inhuman acrobatics and feats of improbable strength. The directing felt like a B movie with a full Hollywood budget - lazy writing, poor CGI and some bad acting. That doesn’t mean this wasn’t a fun movie. I really enjoyed the film but that is probably more my love of the franchise speaking than love for this particular movie. I wish we got the sequel teased at the end, but that seems increasingly unlikely. I still would recommend and think most adventure movie lovers would enjoy it as long as they don’t expect too much.
