underappreciated masterpiece

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy (2015): A mystery suspense thriller set in the 1940s where the Japanese and Chinese gang take over some parts of Kolkata and Byimkesh is in the middle of finding an acquaintance’s missing father. The plot is great and it’s really amusing on how the story unfolds as the movie progresses. What seems simple at first becomes more complex and involving as the characters try to solve the mystery. This and the visuals are what makes this movie very gripping. The pacing and screenplay are tight and are crafted well by great direction. While most of the performances are good, a couple of characters could have been better casted for more impact. The background music is good and intense but the English metal songs at a few places feel like a misfit. It’s nice to see that the movie relies on sets and actual locations over green screen, the setting and atmosphere are well made in this film. The movie was a box office success, but deserves much more appreciation. The audience and critic ratings are very positive. There’s some violent scenes, few scenes with drug abuse, and a couple of seduction scenes. This is probably one of the best mystery suspense thriller out there. #DetectiveBombkeshBakshy #DetectiveBombkeshBakshyReview A quite engrossing investigative thriller with a intriguing setup. Revelations were too gud at the climax portion. Though everything has been detailed in a convincing manner, felt a bit oversmart at places but placing a same twist for the 2nd time was genuinely smart. Its predictable in the 1st time but not at the next.

If there is a list of movies where the audience yearned for more and expected the movie to start its own franchise, Dibakar Banerjee’s Byomkesh Bakshi will surely make the cut. It might not have been a huge blockbuster at the box office, which usually isn’t a direct mapping of the movie being good in Bollywood but Byomkesh Bakshi has its own fan following both among critics and fans. The character building of India’s very own popular fictional detective, the complex storyline with multiple threads woven into each other and the brilliant acting of most of the characters all in the charismatic background of yesteryear Calcutta makes for an engaging watch throughout. For fans of Sherlock who aren’t aware of Byomkesh as a detective character, it surely will be a recommended start ! The lead character played by Late Sushant was the backbone of this movie and so was that of the antagonist played by Neeraj Kabi. The chemistry between Byomkesh and his future aide Ajit builds up nicely with effective comic punches. Sushant fits into the titular role so easily that even if a sequel is planned for this it will be very hard to accept anyone else. Maybe that’s why Dibakar Banerjee isn’t planning the same. Definitely a must watch and among one of finest detective movies made in recent years !!
