A decent horror movie, with a great look to it. Period piece horrors always seem to look great, its always bleacher looking and with creepier set pieces. And Radcliffe put in a very respectable performance. The film just didn’t scare me though, not at all, and as a horror, it kind of failed.

For a PG13 horror movie this one wasn’t bad. The creepiness of a house that large during that time, when everything was lit by candlelight makes everything so much more beautiful and scary. The story is a bit of a slow burn, really drawing the story out as Arthur explores the house and experiences everything himself. There are some really well timed and places jump scares, which when used well like this are actually fun. Pay attention to the background during the scenes in the house, there are so many little things in the shadows to notice. Overall this was a beautifully shot movie with a decently creepy story that was executed ok. It’s not the most exciting but for a PG13 horror it’s the perfect intro to the genre for kids. I won’t be watching it again but I’m glad I rewatched it. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a watch if you don’t have anything to watch.

A lawyer named Aruthur Kipps is told to travel to a remote village to sort out some paperwork from a recently deceased client in the Eel Marsh House. While staying in there, he uncovers the tragic truth about the client and her rage upon the town. Why are the children dying, and who is the mysterious women in black? This is a very gothic and dystopian kind of film with so many grim elements that work in the runtime it's given. Arthur Kipps, played by Daniel Radcliff, is amazing in the role. He starts of a bit stale being very mysterious and suffering with terrible PTSD but as the film carries on you see his more loving, compassionate and heroic side for not just his son but the town as he starts to believe the supernatural. This films antagonist is very mysterious, and I like how we don't see the women in Black up close until the very end. We get several shots of her either very far away, which is usually a POV or up close as a jumpscare. Her design, being just a woman in a black dress, is very disturbing and uneassy to look at as she looks like death and links into her overall motive. Having the plot centring around family and loss is a perfect concept for this grim thriller. This plot point could be enterpreted in two ways. One is all about how the parents in the town are loosing there kids by the wrath and control of the women and black, but also answers the women in blacks motive on why she taking kids and why she's so vengeful towards the village. I like how the plot is solving two crucial questions simultaneously, which is very clever. Addtionally, letting us see the children die and the amount of power the women in black has is quite terrifying. The music and tension are the strongest parts of the film, with it having so many tense and atmospheric scenes inside and within the land of the Eel Marsh House. There are some really good scenes between Arthur Kipps and the women in black that with the music makes my spine shiver such as the graveyard scene and the rocking chair. The are some good cinematography such as when the Lady in Black tries to sneak up on Arthur with the camera being in her POV, as she get closer and closer, and Arthur is in a frame within a frame represented by the door. It just looks beautiful with the addition of the dimmed lighting from outside and the candles. They did a great job capturing the late 18th/ early 19th century lifestyle and aesthetic with all the costumes and sets they use to really make you think you're back in time. The sets they use are outstanding, and the costumes look so authentic. I personally like the Lady in Black's costume, as I have said before, her look is just disturbing and after we see her at the end with her pitch black dress and her white painted face looking straight at us. It's just spine tingling. There are many symbolic messaging and show don't tell moments that I really like to. However, some scenes looked a but goofy like the ending. Some of the jumpscares were unnecessary, and the pacing at the start was very fast. Overall, it's a very entertaining story with plenty of dark and symbolic moments that make you ponder the question. Is the supernatural real?
