Well, the ending made it much less creepy. It could very well be the villain of an episode of Supernatural (the difference being that I actually like Supernatural).
A nice mix of found footage, haunted house, and bad family decisions round out Sinister pretty well. As frustrating as it is to watch Hawke's character devolve into his own madness, it sets the tone and stage for everything that happens. I totally forgot how this played out but enjoyed it even though it was definitely the wrong movie to watch on the treadmill because it's so dark. I wasn't too jumpy but F a bunch of finding a box of old reels in the attic of a new house. Now to skip the urge to watch the bad sequel that I know I've seen but don't remember either. Also worth noting that Fred Thompson's career is wild: he did Baby's Day Out and then was a Senator in TN then was the DA in Law & Order, ran for president and then was a shitty police chief in this movie. 399/500 movies & tv for 2024
7/10 The scares are generally pretty good here. Some of them feel cheap, like the whole scene where the ghost kids walk around while Ellison is investigating the noises he heard during the night, but for the most part, they got me. I didn’t much care for any of the characters in Sinister besides Ellison. They weren’t particularly bad or anything. They were just kind of there. As expected from Scott Derrickson’s films, the cinematography and score are both great and contribute to the horror in wonderful ways.
