Cult Classic... Finally I got to watch this in the cinema and it was an amazing experience. The characters writing, plot establishment, progressing all the characters and plot throughout without wasting a single character shows a brilliance of story-writing. I've always loved this film for its unapologetically brutal and realistic portrayal of an epic dark comedy crime drama film. It brilliantly weaves all plot points into a single narrative as it collides three generations of enmity. The performances and its dialogues have left a Cultural legacy that after a decade it's still unmatched in its filmmaking style and nuanced story-writing of a gangster crime drama.

Gangs of Wasseypur 1 is a sprawling Indian crime drama that delves into the dark world of organized crime in the coal-mining town of Wasseypur. The film follows the brutal feud between the Khan and Singh families, spanning several decades. The film's complex and morally ambiguous characters are a highlight, with Manoj Bajpayee delivering a standout performance as the charismatic but ruthless Sardar Khan. The film's visuals are stunning, capturing the rugged beauty of Wasseypur and the gritty reality of its underworld. While the film's violence may be disturbing to some, it is integral to the story and serves as a commentary on the cycle of revenge and retribution. Gangs of Wasseypur 1 is a powerful and unforgettable cinematic experience that explores the dark side of human nature with unflinching honesty.

Felt like a long walk for too little pay off. I like all the familial drama, and the photography is superb. The crime drama on the other hand, I didn't connect with as much. The pacing and the tone feel at odds here. For a story about a rivalry between two violent gang leaders, this movie is strangely mellow. Despite the occasional scenes of action or violence. The history of these criminals is given to us like a book report. Large swaths of time are relegated to a single line of voice over narration. The actual crime scenes are rarely distinct from similar scenes of other films in the genre, and are often predictable. Important changes happen too quickly after their conception, never allowing the stakes of any given situation to sink in fully. I wish I got into this more than I did, but it was for various reasons an interesting watch for me, keeping in mind that I am not remotely an expert on the breadth of Indian cinema, since this was my first Bollywood movie. ★★★ - good movie (6/10)

Directed by Anurag Kashyap, "Gangs of Wasseypur" is an epic crime saga spanning generations in the coal mafia of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. The film follows the intergenerational feud between the Qureshi and Singh families, driven by revenge, power struggles, and betrayal. Anurag Kashyap's direction is bold and audacious, blending elements of crime, politics, and black comedy to create a sprawling narrative that captivates viewers from start to finish. The ensemble cast, including Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Richa Chadha, deliver powerhouse performances that bring depth to their complex characters. The film's screenplay, co-written by Anurag Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri, offers a rich tapestry of storytelling that explores themes of violence, ambition, and the cyclical nature of vengeance. "Gangs of Wasseypur" is a cinematic tour de force that defies conventions and deserves more acclaim for its bold storytelling, memorable characters, and uncompromising vision.
