Man in the Iron Mask was probably a solid film when it was originally released, but the decades have not been kind. I remember Man in the Iron Mask being a big deal upon its original release in 1998, but I didn't actually watch it until now. I appreciated a Musketeers story that took a different route telling a story many years after their traditional tale of heroism and freeing the throne from the clutches of the evil Cardinal Richelieu. Instead, the Musketeers are older and accustomed to their lives, retired from heroics, and must be stirred from their rest to save the kingdom once again. All that is admirable and sounds terrific, especially with a cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, John Malkovich, and Jeremy Irons, but sadly the movie didn't age well. The film was extremely 90s in its action and scripting. I literally laughed out loud at some of the poor dialogue and bad acting moments. It's not a bad movie and was probably superb in 1998, but in 2023, it's dated. I much prefer The Three Musketeers (1993) with Keifer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen. Check that one out instead.
