The opening scene will go down as one of the most unnecessary in a horror movie to me. Sissy Spacek is unparalleled in her performance and makes this what it is. The music and some other decisions felt out of place for a horror movie but I did love a lot of the framing elements and focused perspectives that were done by cinematographer Tosi. The slow build of the story is worth the payoff and following the compounded trauma inflicted on Carrie forces you, as the viewer, to decide what's right or justified. This was a first viewing, for me, and it's very good, but I can't shake the male gazey ignorance of how it was made. 425/500 movies & tv for 2023

8.4/10 The camerawork here is amazing. In the scene where Carrie breaks the mirror, they frame the Jesus painting looking down on her was really neat, and so was the shot spinning around Tommy and Carrie. What’s really interesting about the plot here is that Carrie’s powers aren’t really the crux of the movie. They let the characters drive everything for at least the first two acts. One of the real twists here was that Sue was unaware of the prank. I figured she would’ve been in on it, but I could tell Tommy was genuinely trying to be nice. The only thing is, I wish we got more of Chris’ motivations. It’s kind of strange that she just hates Carrie. I was curious to see why, but we never got it. I was also confused why Ms. Desjardin laughed at Carrie at the end. It came off as extremely out of character, considering that, before that moment, she basically represented the good side of motherhood that Carrie was never exposed to. The music here works on multiple levels. The main theme sounds more somber than anything. The soundtrack, thankfully, doesn’t feel random. They included a song during the dance about God, if there is one, hearing the singer at last, which applies well to Carrie. My only real issue with the finale was the strange editing choice of having side-by-side shots of the carnage. It came off as very cheesy and unnecessary, and ended up lessening the impact a bit for me. Otherwise, it’s well executed.

The peak of "form" in cinema! What happens at the end is even on the poster, and it doesn't really matter, in narrative terms, it's a very simple film, but even so, it has very powerful content; Carrie is troubled by her mother's religious fanaticism and bullying at school; The prom scene is incredible, everything culminates in the beginning of a dreamlike dream (I think this is a bit redundant, but it is a dream in form and content), with saturated and playful colors and straight into a long Hitchcockian 360°, until This dream reveals itself as a monochromatic, red nightmare. "And God Made Eve", one of the great themes of horror. This wasn't a Halloween watch, I watched it last month, but get ready for a post on Instagram to come out soon.
