7.2/10 Clint Eastwood is very, well, Clint Eastwood in his performance as Dave Garver: cool, smooth, and suave. Jessica Walter, though, talks fast and laughs awkwardly, really making Evelyn seem all the more insane. It’s almost hard to watch her mental spiral. Dave’s dialogue can be strange, though. It gets repetitive easily, as he repeats phrases like “Now listen,” “That’s what I’m trying to tell you,” and “Can we just talk?” He speaks in quite a roundabout way that is to the detriment of the scene pacing. The film’s tension can work in some scenes, but for most of the runtime, it’s kind of just weird. Not intense, but Evelyn will do something odd every few scenes or so. Saw must have taken cues from Play Misty for Me for its car chase. The intercutting between Dave driving to Tobie’s house and Evelyn was way too quick. The editing is otherwise fine, though.
